The Museum of Modern Art in Brussels, a department of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, has been closed for renovations since February 1, 2011. However, the Modern Art museum itself will cease to exist, and will be replaced by a “Fin du siècle Museum”, dedicated to the 19th Century.

The collections of the 20th and 21st Centuries will no longer be open to the public, except for occasional exhibitions of selected pieces, or when loaned for display to other museums.

Does the closure of the Modern Art Museum, without provision of any realistic alternative, or delay for further discussion, allow the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium to meet its objective of increasing the value of its capital assets by opening the collections to the public?

The Belgian artistic world sees the move as a window shutter closing, throwing the 20th and 21st Centuries collections into darkness. Works by Bacon, Boltanski, Dali, Jorn, Klee, Moore, Opalka, Paik, and those of Belgian artists such as Alechinsky, Broodthaers, Delvaux, Permeke, Spilliaert, Tuymans, Van den Berghe, Vantongerloo, Vermeiren, Wéry, Wouters seem destined to spend their time in some basement for many years. It is not acceptable to have to wait for a hypothetical “future new museum” to be able to show – and to see – these collections.

As citizens we can’t accept this closure. We need a Museum of Modern Art. This museum belongs to us; we need it; the 20th and 21st Centuries collections are ours – they are part of our heritage.

We demand:
— A permanent open-to-the public home for the 20th and 21st Centuries collections – as soon as next year – whatever other options may be for the future.
— A wide public debate, open to all concerned parties

This petition will be put before
— The Director-General of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, and
— The Minister responsible for the Federal Science Policy Office.
